If you have a spare room you could earn money whilst really helping a young person from your local community.
Well, you have got two options Supported Lodgings or Fostering.
Supported Lodgings is an accommodation scheme for young people aged 16 plus who are unable to live at home, but are not yet ready to live independently. These placements are seen as a stepping stone, they aim to provide young people with practical and emotional assistance to reach independence, whilst in the safety and security of a family environment.
Some of the practical things that you may need to help a young person with are day to day things that you might take for granted now, but even you had to learn at some point e.g. cooking a healthy meal, cleaning and budgeting.
Emotional assistance may include encouragement in applying for jobs and studying for courses to being supportive and understanding when things don’t work out just quite as they had hoped.
Fostering gives a younger person a home and helps to provide the support they need to develop into a confident and successful adult.
The sort of children we are trying to find placements for are generally 11+ (although sometimes younger) and have complex emotional, behavioural or social difficulties due to a variety of reasons. These children may have ended up in a care situation as a result of abuse, trauma (such as bereavement, serious illness or disability of a family member), serious family breakdown, abandonment, drug abuse or a range of other problems or situations.
What they really need is a supportive family environment and someone to help them work through their feelings in order for them to develop into a confident, well adjusted adult.
